I like the concept of the circle as people disputed in class but I do agree that the placement of the letter within the circle can make or break the effectiveness. So I would say definitely keep the circle but keep the letters within the boundary of the circle.
I love the Design concept and the colors, it looks very clean. I would like to see some text added or some kind of short explanation of what is happening since it is not always perfectly clear. I would not add too much text though since it could take away from the clean design.
I really liked how you were thinking of going experimental with this book. I think that eliminating the term on each page would be cool. I also think that the circle is great. Maybe you can use the circle to "magnify" the key elements in each one. Maybe instead of the p escaping the circle to demonstrate a descender, have the p on top of the circle and let the descender stay inside of the circle. Maybe highlight the element in action in another color, like the red that you are using in the brackets.
